Silt fencing, also known as silt stop, is a temporary barrier intended for retaining sediment and preventing pollution on construction sites.
Made from synthetic filtration fabric (usually geotextile filter fabric, woven together to create sheets of material that are extremely strong yet water permeable), they’re often used in conjunction with bulk bags and pre-filled sandbags.
Silt fencing is designed to provide temporary protection to rivers, lakes, and streams by preventing loose soil or silt from migrating into the water and causing pollution.
Once the ground is no longer being disturbed by activities such as construction and revegetation and permanent soil stabilisation has begun, then the silt fencing can be removed.
